Bokashi Composting
Bokashi compost is a convenient in-kitchen food waste fermentation process first developed in Japan in the 1970's. It uses microorganisms (like those found in bread and yeast) to 'pickle' food scraps, preventing them from rotting and producing bad smells and predigesting them for rapid incorporation into the soil. So rapid in fact, that the interval between first collecting your food scraps in the Bokashi bucket and subsequently planting seedlings atop the buried compost is usually 6-8 weeks.

For Homes
Our bokashi buckets come with all you need to start composting with bokashi straight away. The instruction booklet is comprehensive and clearly written, including a trouble shooting section (and contact details for hunter gatherer designs should all else fail!) The bokashi process is simple and convenient, dealing effectively with the vast majority of food scraps generated in the kitchen, and requiring fewer trips to the garden to dispose of the end product. It is fantastic food for the garden plants, enriching the soil and fostering the proliferation of beneficial microbes within the soil.

For Schools
The Scraps from Lunch to Lunch from Scraps program involves the participation of students in observing a complete nutrient cycle, from the composting of their lunch scraps to the harvesting of vegetables and herbs grown therein, to make a special lunch. The program, initially funded by the City of Unley with support from KESAB, has worked with over 40 educational sites including schools, kindergartens and child care centres using the rapid Bokashi composting system to generate results within two school term. The response to the program has been very positive:

  • The process is simple and hygienic; Involvement of children in the process - practical involvement - Bertram Hawker Kindergarten
  • Children could see the cycle of composting to harvesting. Gave us a focus for recycling; fitted into science programme - Goodwood Primary
  • The program is "quick" - the children can see and do the whole process in a short space of time - Clarence Gardens Kindergarten
  • Children see the value of composting - Glen Osmond Primary
  • Generated a lot of interest from parents -Clarence Park Community Kindergarten

For Offices
Lunch time presentations to staff explain how the Bokashi composting system works and assists with the setting up of a system in the office area. Similar methodologies to our home workshops are used to ensure everyone has a clear idea of how to use it.

QED Consulting say...

The advantages we've found with the bokashi over (conventional) composting are:
  • Fewer issues with contamination
  • It's easier to manage
  • Staff acceptance and education - it's a lot more acceptable than a week-old bucket of food scraps in the kitchen and is more hygienic.

We can design programs to meet the needs of the groups involved. Contact us if you would like to arrange a meeting to find out more about Bokashi composting.
