Four Views of the River
ceramic and stainless steel mosaic
each panel approx 900 x 1200mm.

Four Views of the River, 2005
Location: Foyer of Payneham Library & Community Complex (Tirkandi), Turner Street, Payneham

Description: The four large mosaic panels greet the visitor as they enter the Complex, presenting a design that is readable at a cursory glance yet contains sufficient detail to reward further inspection. The inspiration for this artwork comes from an historically-based imagining of the changing patterns in the landscapes along the River Torrens.

Each panel represents how people understood and utilised the land in one of four eras: Kaurna times, early settlement, the inter-war period and the present day. The palette evokes old maps, dry grass and street directories, and consistencies within the tesserae suggest vegetation and land management practices.

Commissioned by: The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters 2003.
