'The McCarob Garden of Fun', Go Organic Festival 2005
Victoria Park Racecourse, 24th- 25th September

hunter gatherer designs initiated, designed and managed the 'McCarob Garden of Fun' for the Go Organic Festival at Victoria Park Racecourse, a 2 day event held in conjunction with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) World Congress.

The 'Garden of Fun' led children inside a huge sunflower cubby in search of sunflower seeds, through worm tunnels to investigate the soil and to the potato farm where they harvested organic potatoes, washed them at the solar powered washing stations and took them to the resident chef for cooking. They then enjoyed taste testing the different varieties! To top it off, they could also make a mini scarecrow. All activities were free of charge.

"There is no doubt that the success of the Festival was underpinned by the Children’s activities area, which gave it a special place for all the family. The credit is surely yours."
Gerry Butler, Convenor, Go Organic Festival

The Sunflower Cubby
A hands-on activity for pre-schoolers and Junior Primary students. The Sunflower Cubby is a large flower shaped cubby-house. The petals form a series of tunnels that join at the centre, where the domed centre of the flower provides a central "room" for the Petal tunnels. Sunflower seeds are scattered through the tunnels for children to collect.

Kids love spending time in the tunnels and meeting in the middle of the sunflower as they collect and share their seeds. After being delighted by the treasure hunt they take home their findings for planting.

The design is made from polypipe and open weave fabric creating a safe and flexible form.
The sunflower cubby was first enjoyed at the Hindmarsh Community Festival, 1997:"Thank you for your colourful contribution to the Hindmarsh Community Festival... the sunflower was a huge success."
Sam Turnbull, Hindmarsh Community Festival Committee
